Grilled Candied Bacon and Egg Bread Bowl

Having the right ingredients is crucial to making delicious egg bread bowls. The good news is that this recipe only requires FIVE main ingredients, with the rest as optional fillings.

Here is a list of all the ingredients you need for 4 servings:

  • 4 Crusty bread rolls or Kaiser rolls
  • 4 Large eggs
  • 4 Slices of thick-cut bacon
  • 1/4 cup of shredded cheese
  • 1 Tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 Tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar
  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper

  • Grape tomatoes
  • Herbed goat cheese
  • Parsley
  • Caramelized onions
  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Arugula
  • Prosciutto
  • Cilantro
  • Spinach artichoke dip
  • Cooked sausage
  • Pre-cooked potatoes
  • Deli ham

Do not fret if you have more fillings than you need. You may use the extra filling for Spanish omelets or vegetable salad.

Quick Tip

Unless you don’t mind waking up early in the morning to prepare your fillings, we suggest that you do so the night before. After all, the fillings do not have to be hot, since you’ll still grill them anyway.


Step 1

The first step is to prepare your grill. If you are using a charcoal grill, create two cooking zones by placing pre-heated charcoal briquettes on one side of the grill. Charcoal briquettes will be the best fuel source for this recipe. Thereafter, adjust the vents of the grill to bring the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Alternatively, if you are using an electric or gas grill, simply adjust the temperature using the designated knobs, such that one side of the grill is off and the other is heated. Make sure the temperature on the heated side is approximately 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2

Prep your bread bowls by cutting off the top of each roll and then hollow out the soft interior of the bread to create a cavity. Make sure that the sides and the bottom of the rolls remain intact. Ideally, the crust should remain as thick as possible.

Once your bread bowls are ready, brush the inside with melted butter, and then season the content with sea salt and black pepper.

Step 3

To prepare candied bacon, place the slices on a wire rack then marinate them with honey or maple syrup. For this, you may use a simple food brush to spread the honey or the maple syrup on the bacon slices.

Sprinkle the slices of bacon with brown sugar, and then place the wire rack on the unheated side of the grill. Cover the grill for about 15 minutes to allow the bacon slices to cook from the indirect heat.

DO NOT allow the bacon slices to turn crisp since you will still need to grill them again with your egg bread bowls. You should, therefore, remove the rack from the searing grill after 15 minutes, and set it aside to allow the bacon to cool, before handling.

Step 4

Gather all your buttered bread roll bowls and add 1 tablespoon of shredded cheese to each cavity. Thereafter, swathe a slice of bacon inside the bread roll along the edge of the cavity to form a ring. Do this for each bread bowl.

Fill the bread rolls with your favorite fillings, but make sure you leave enough space for the eggs.

Once the bread bowls are ready, crack an egg into a small plastic bowl and pour the content into the space created by the bacon ring until the hole is full. You may use the whites only or whisk the eggs together before pouring them into each roll.

Since the bread bowls contain salt and pepper, you should avoid adding more salt. You should only do so if you did not season the bread rolls in Step 2 above.

Step 5

Your grilled candied bacon and egg bread bowl is almost ready! The only step remaining is grilling your bacon and egg bread bowl combo!

If you love the smoked flavor for your bacon and bread bowls, then we suggest you opt for the charcoal grill.

Add a chunk or two of smoking wood to your grill and then allow the wood to heat up for a few seconds.

Once again, place your stuffed bread bowls on a wire rack, on the unheated side of the grill. Cover the grill for about 25 minutes to allow your assembled ingredients to cook until the desired egg temperature is set.

If your grill has a transparent lid or viewing window, the better since you’ll be able to check on the progress of the grilling process without removing the lid.

Step 6

Your grilled candied bacon and egg bread bowls should be ready after 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the bowls from the grill and place them on a plate, ready to serve. If you like, you may garnish with fresh herbs, olive oil, chopped parsley, and spices and serve hot.
