Barbeque weekends are certainly the perfect time for family and friends to hang out over a scrumptious meal of smoked sausages, grilled meat, and cold drinks. However, having the same delicacies on your barbeque list can sometimes be downright boring. 

The good news is that this does not have to be you! You can turn things around by trying out new cuisines for your outdoor parties. 

Today we are going to show you how to make maple glazed barbeque ribs. This recipe consists of extremely tender baby back pork ribs wrapped in a foil and mopped with pure maple syrup, to deliver the perfect savory dish for your barbeque parties.

Here’s a detailed recipe for this finger-licking delicacy.

Maple Glazed BBQ Ribs

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 3-4 hours


Main Ingredients

  • 1 or 2 slabs of pork back ribs
  • 1/4 cup real maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup apple juice, wine or beer
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 4 tablespoons Memphis BBQ Rib Rub

Ingredients for Memphis BBQ Rub

  • 2 teaspoons rosemary powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground ginger powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons onion powder
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup paprika


STEP 1 – Skin Your Pork Ribs

Before you start grilling, you are advised to remove the membrane off the underside of the ribs. Even though it’s not compulsory, skinning the ribs will allow the different aromatic flavors to penetrate better into the meat. Moreover, removing the membrane makes it easier for the ribs to become tender when searing.

The process is relatively easy. You just need to pierce one end of the rib using a knife and pull off the membrane. You may use a paper towel to get a good grip on the membrane and pull it off without ripping it midway. 

STEP 2 – Make the BBQ Rib Rub

Popular joints and eateries use the Memphis dry rub for their BBQ recipes, and so should you. You can buy this BBQ Rib Rub, however, this dust rub is also easy to make at home as long as you have the right ingredients.

Simply gather all your ingredients as listed above and mix them in a bowl. The sugar may form lumps, but you can crush them easily by hand or using a fork against the side of the bowl.

STEP 3 – Rub the Ribs with the Spice Mix

Before brushing your meat with the Memphis BBQ rub, soak the surface of the meat with water and then sprinkle half a teaspoon of kosher salt. Ideally, you should apply kosher salt the night before, but doing so right before searing the meat is also appropriate.

After wetting the surface, brush the ribs with Memphis BBQ dust rub or your favorite commercial barbeque rub to create a thick coat.

STEP 4 – Set Up Your Grill for Indirect Cooking

Now that your ribs are ready, it’s time to fire up the grill. Set up your grill by creating two cooking zones. To do this, heat up one side to 225 degrees Fahrenheit and leave the other side with no flames. 

Since we are cooking indirectly, you should place the ribs on the cool side of the grill. This will help prevent burning or charring.

STEP 5 – Smoke the Ribs 

To give the ribs an authentic taste, we have to smoke it!

If you are using a charcoal grill, add wood to produce sufficient smoke for your ribs. For electric indoor grills, adjust the knobs to release adequate smoke and roast the ribs for about 2 hours. Check the ribs every few minutes to ensure that there are no flames.

STEP 6 – Wrap the Meat in Foil

After about 2 hours, your ribs should be ready for the next step. Wrap the ribs in two layers of foil and pour half a cup of apple juice, wine or beer into the foil. Do not pour the juice on the ribs to avoid washing off the BBQ rub.

Seal the foil tightly over the top to prevent any leakages or steam escaping from the top. Ideally, you should place the meaty side up so that the bones do not puncture the foil.

Once you are sure that the foil is tightly sealed, place it on the grill and sear the ribs in foil for about 30 minutes. This should be enough time for the juice of the meat and the flavor of the rub to mix with the apple juice.

STEP 7 – Unwrap the Ribs and Sear with no Smoke

Take the meat out of the grill after the 30 minutes and unwrap it from the foil. Now, put it back into the grill at 225 degrees Fahrenheit, but this time without any smoke. Ideally, this step should last for about an hour or less, until the crust of the ribs becomes firm.

While the meat is searing, transfer the apple juice from the foil to a saucepan and add the remaining 1/2 cup of juice to the pan. Boil the mixture for a few minutes until a third of it remains in the pan. Add maple syrup to the mixture and heat until it foams.

Remove the pan from heat and add salt and hot sauce, and then stir gently.

STEP 8 – Rub the Meaty Side of the Ribs

Brush the meaty side of the ribs with the maple sauce mixture until it makes a shiny glaze. However, do not rub too much sauce to maintain the shiny glaze.

Place the ribs on the hot side of the grill for about 5 minutes, meat side down until the glaze burbles.

Serve the maple glazed BQ ribs when still hot with your favorite side dish.
