Firewood Rack

Firewood is useful for a lot of purposes. Whether you like to build a nice fire in your fireplace on the regular or make campfires, or even do open flame grilling, having firewood on hand is useful. If you keep enough around as well, you’re going to need somewhere to put it.

For very small amounts, you can get away with a  small stack in a cool, dry place, and for larger amounts you’ll need a shed or something similar, but for everything else: there’s a firewood rack.

They come in many different types and sizes, so let’s go over them, and then some of the best around.

How Do I Choose The Perfect Firewood Rack?

Firewood racks are pretty simple. They need to be sturdy, above all else.

Stainless steel is the construction material of choice, of course. It’s sturdy and immune to corrosion, so it can stay outside for long periods in the rain without issue. It also helps when you have a hundred pounds or more (often a lot more for the larger options) of wood bearing down on it; you want a material that isn’t going to bend or break easily.

The second factor is size, and it’s all about how much you actually need. The average outdoor firewood rack holds about half a cord; maybe 100 or 150 good sized logs. If you don’t need as much, you can buy a smaller model. In other words, bigger is not always better, by a long shot. If you only need to store 50 lbs. of wood at a time, there’s no point in getting something that can store 50 times that. It’ll often be more expensive, and always take up a lot more space.

If you can, try to build your own firewood rack or find one that comes with a cover that’s breathable and short; it keeps the top wood relatively dry while allowing the wood lower down to breathe and dry out over time when it does inevitably get wet.

The 7 Best Firewood Racks Reviews of 2022

1. Woodhaven the 8 Foot Firewood Log Rack with Cover

Woodhaven

Why you’ll love this:

If you are looking for a great quality firewood rack, and also want to support a small business, then you’ll want to check out the Woodhaven 8-foot firewood log rack.

The Woodhaven is exceptionally well-made. This sturdy and fairly large firewood rack is made from 16-gauge steel that is arc welded on the ends for connections that are intended to last many years. Each part of it is black powder coated to protect it from rusting and corrosion.

The Woodhaven rack comes with a durable cover that hangs over the top 12-inches of the wood stack and self-adjusts as you use logs.

What We Liked

  • Materials: The welded frame of the Woodhaven firewood log rack, combined with stainless steel construction, make this one of the best firewood racks you can buy. The materials are long lasting and durable. The vinyl cover is also heavy-duty and durable.
  • Durability: The powder coated stainless steel with arc welded joints is made to stand up to the weather and a full half cord of wood. Parts that are assembled at home come with substantial nuts and bolts for a sturdy connection.
  • Capacity: It holds a half cord of wood. When you break that down, its about 200 pieces of split firewood. This is more than enough to last you most of the winter.
  • Included Cover: The specially designed cover is made to cover the first few rows of wood. This keeps the wood dry and ready for use at any time. Because this cover doesn’t extend over the whole rack, fresh cut wood is able to dry, thanks to complete airflow around the rack.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Price: This is one of the more expensive firewood racks that you’ll come across. However, in this case you get what you pay for. This sturdy, USA built firewood rack is constructed of quality materials and craftsmanship.
  • Size: This is big. It has a large footprint, and weighs quite a bit when assembled (46 pounds). While it holds a good quantity of firewood, for some people this may be too much for their needs.

This is an excellently sturdy behemoth of a firewood rack, though be prepared to pay a premium for such a durable and long lasting, high capacity firewood log rack.

Obviously, this is a bit overkill for some people, but those who need this much firewood should give this one serious consideration. While expensive, it’s also built to last a lifetime, so it’ll pay for itself pretty quickly in the long run if you have a true need for this much firewood. If not, you should consider a smaller option, but the sheer quality of this one is enough for me to comfortably give it my seal of approval as the winner here.

2. Landmann USA 8 Foot Firewood Rack

Landmann USA

Why you’ll love this:

If you are looking for a way to store your firewood, but aren’t committed to a storage location, you’ll want to pick the Landmann USA 8-foot firewood rack. This rack is durable and lightweight making it easy to fill and move.

The Landmann USA firewood rack allows you to stack plenty of firewood off the ground, protecting it from moisture and insects.

The simple yet sturdy design of this firewood rack makes it easy to assemble as well as strong enough to hold two-thirds of a cord of wood. The powder coated steel construction is long lasting and weather proof.

What We Liked

  • Capacity: This is a good sized at 8’ long and 3’ tall it holds 2/3 cord of wood. It is not so big that it is difficult to manage or you never get to rotate your wood pile.
  • Materials: Tubular steel is one of the best materials for heavy items. This rack is made from 18 gauge steel that is powder coated. This rack is strong and sturdy, and relatively rust resistant.
  • Easy to assemble: This rack is easy to assemble with tools that everyone has around the house. If you want to expand the size of this rack, just purchase additional sections. New sections are just as easy to add.
  • Price: Even though this rack is fairly substantial and made from quality materials, it is affordably priced.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Durability: While the materials are decent, and the firewood rack is weatherproof, it isn’t as strong as others, especially if it has to hold up water-soaked logs. For added durability and longevity you’ll want to store this under an awning or in a shed or garage.
  • Stability: This rack doesn’t have the most supportive feet and legs. It feels a little wobbly. A good practice with it might be limiting how much wood you load.

This is a great size and build for a “casual but serious” user; you use a lot of wood for recreational purposes, preferring it for heating or using a lot of wood for campfires and the like, but don’t RELY on wood as your main heating source, so you don’t need something like a full shed that’s going to store a cord for the winter.

For that kind of user it’s very hard to argue with the price, which is significantly cheaper than a lot of options here, and as long as you don’t abuse it the durability should never be in question either, though I’d keep this in a relatively sheltered place (under an overhang or roof lip) so there’s less risk of the wood soaking in water and overloading the tubes. That’s the danger with anything with a bit of height to it and less solid construction.

3. Sunnydaze Indoor and Outdoor Firewood Log Rack Bracket Kit

Sunnydaze

Why you’ll love this:

If you would rather construct your own firewood rack, but don’t want to deal with the pain of construction, the Sunnydaze log rack brackets are the perfect answer. These handy steel brackets allow you to use basic 2×4 planks to construct the perfect size.

Each pack comes with a single pair of brackets that can be used to make a firewood rack of any size. If you don’t want to invest in a pre-constructed rack, or if you are looking to fit a firewood rack into a specifically sized space, these brackets are the perfect answer.

What We Liked

  • Capacity: Because this is a bracket kit, and you use brackets to construct the firewood rack you want, the sky’s the limit with this woodpile. Build small to large firewood racks with minimal materials.
  • Materials: Each bracket is made from 1/8’ thick powder coated steel. The brackets are rust resistant and weather resistant, so they’ll last a long time.
  • Durability:  You’re building your own firewood rack from strong 2 x 4 boards and a steel bracket. These materials are exceptionally strong and will securely hold as much wood as needed.
  • Versatile: Each kit comes with two brackets. However, these two brackets can be used to make a firewood rack that is just the perfect length for your space or storage needs. If you need something larger, purchasing additional brackets allows you to extend the size of it.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Assembly Required: To be fair, all of the racks on this list have some assembly necessary, but these brackets require to actually build a firewood rack. If you don’t have appropriate woodworking tools, or you’re not DIY skilled, this option isn’t going to be the best for you.
  • Wood not Included: This rack is super customizable, but if you need to build a larger rack, and need a number of 2 x 4’s (even a single rack requires 6 boards), your rack may end up not being as affordable as you thought. With lumber prices higher than ever, this might be a limitation for your pocketbook.

This is a great option for people who inconsistently use firewood, or may use different amounts each year. You can take the rack apart easily and store the brackets (and planks) away nice and neat, or even use the planks for something else if you need to.

It’s not for everyone and the simple wood rack design can even be replicated at home with just some sturdy wood and nails. However, giving it a second look, the majority of people will need benefit from the storage volume of the rack.

4. ShelterLogic Adjustable Heavy Duty Firewood Rack

ShelterLogic

Why you’ll love this:

The ShelterLogic adjustable firewood rack is much like other options out there. It is a sturdy, well-made steel woodpile rack. The 8-foot long frame holds up to 2,500 pounds and nearly a half cord of wood.

However, the best part of this firewood rack is the cover. The ShelterLogic cover provides protection for the top 24 inches of your wood stack. As you use wood, the cover easily slides down the rack ends to keep all of your wood perfectly covered. The polyester cover is weather proof and sturdy.

The ShelterLogic sits high enough off the ground that your firewood stays dry and is protected from insects.

What We Liked

  • Capacity: The ShelterLogic is designed to hold 2/5 cord of wood. This is around 100 logs. From the weight standpoint this rack can hold up to 2200 pounds.
  • Materials: It is made from powder coated steel tubing for optimal strength. The spreader bar on this rack is also reinforced so it’s extra strong.
  • Durability: The powder coating on this is more reliable that some other options. The DuPont coating is stronger and resists scratching and chipping better than other products. This helps improve the weatherproofing and rust resistance of this firewood rack.
  • Easy to Use Cover: The fully adjustable cover is made from 300D polyester. The innovative design fits perfectly over the frame and easily adjusts with the height of the wood. This keeps your firewood dry, with minimal work on your part.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Capacity: This is a smaller sized firewood rack, so its capacity is smaller. If you are only occasionally using a firepit or fireplace this might not be a problem, but if you need firewood frequently a larger woodpile rack may serve you better.
  • Wood Size: The lower rails of this are fairly widely spaced. Placing shorter logs on the bottom may cause them to fall through the rails and create and unstable log pile.

Another sturdy and well made tube steel design from Shelter Logic, though significantly smaller than the Landmann model above. That puts it in a bit of an awkward spot in terms of price. While significantly cheaper, I’m not sure it’s so significant as to make up for the roughly halved capacity.

For one, it’s even sturdier than the Landmann model, with double reinforcements at the ends to both make it easier to cradle your keystone woods in a pile and to increase its weight capacity.

I’d say in terms of pure quality this is one of the best here (and certainly a lot better than most tube steel options), the problem is just purely in how little capacity it has; it simply doesn’t hold enough for someone who has serious firewood needs.

5. Inno Stage Firewood Log Rack with Elk Design

Inno Stage

Why you’ll love it:

This attractive wrought iron firewood rack is the perfect addition to your mountain cabin or home patio. The compact Inno Stage with elk details is not only durable and strong, but it is also attractive.

The 4-foot firewood rack is made for both indoor and outdoor use. The compact size makes it perfect for storing wood on smaller patios or even indoors for easy access to firewood.

The Inno Stage has soft plastic feet that are easy on delicate flooring or wood patios. If you’re storing your firewood outdoors the rack elevates your firewood off the ground so it is protected from insects and moisture.

What we liked

  • Capacity: You get a decent amount of capacity with it. It is rated to hold a half cord of wood. This is a good capacity for a home fireplace or outdoor firepit.
  • Materials: This rack is made from wrought iron which is known for being durable and weather resistant. The iron is powder coated for additional protection from the weather.
  • Durability: Powder coated wrought iron is quite strong and made to last a long time. This is a good rack for indoor use, but also can handle being stored outdoors. We also like the added elk details, which makes it nice looking as well as durable.
  • Easy to assemble: This rack comes disassembled in three parts. There aren’t a bunch of tiny pieces to be assembled. The instructions are easy to follow, and all of the necessary hardware is included. It should only take about 10 minutes to assemble.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: You’re going to pay more for this rack. And you’re not paying more for a higher quality material or larger product. You’re paying for the added elk design. If you’re storing this rack in your house or somewhere that it will be seen frequently, the elk is a nice touch. If you’re not in it for looks, you can find an equally good product with the smaller price tag.
  • Portability: This rack is awkward and heavy when assembled, so not terribly easy to move if needed. The gripped feet also make it difficult to slide this rack, even just a few inches.
  • Included Accessories: All you get in the box for this rack is the rack. It doesn’t come with a cover, so if you’re storing your wood outside, you’ll need to purchase a cover or tarp to keep your wood dry.

Another tube steel design, though this one is designed for aesthetics.

The price is a bit high, however; you pay for those elk. It’s not the highest on this list, but definitely more expensive than something in the same general price range, and it’s weirdly slender as well, which might make initial stacking difficult.

Still, paying for aesthetics on something like this is nothing new, and if you don’t mind shelling out an extra $30 or so for a pretty image, it’s a great buy.

6. Best Choice Products Steel Firewood Log Storage Rack

Best Choice Products

Why you’ll love it:

Best Choice Products makes great home items that are reasonably priced. Their steel firewood rack is no different. This is a heavy-duty firewood rack that is also quite attractive. It comes with enough capacity to store 150 pounds of firewood that will last you for a number of days.

While the elegant design of it makes it perfect for holding firewood inside your home, it is also sturdy enough to store your firewood outdoors.

It comes with some great accessories including hooks to hold kindling and a complete set of fireplace tools. The Best Choice Products is easy to assemble and will be ready for firewood in less than half an hour.

What we liked

  • Capacity: The capacity of this rack is clearly smaller than others, but this rack isn’t made for holding all the firewood you have. This attractive firewood rack is made to hold enough for a day or two and be compact enough to fit in your house or patio as well.
  • Materials: We like the powder coated steel construction of this rack. It seems very stable and durable. We were even impressed with the construction and strength of the kindling rack which looked questionable in pictures but turned out to be really sturdy.
  • Included Accessories: This rack comes with all of the accessories you need for keeping your fire going. Included with the rack is: a brush, poker, tongs and shovel for managing your fire. All the tools hang conveniently on four hooks integrated into the rack.
  • Easy to assemble: No tools are required for building this rack. The parts simply slide together. We found that it took us about 15 minutes to construct this rack.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: This rack is a little small for the price. Especially when you consider that you can get a larger rack for about the same price.
  • Size: This rack is quite a bit smaller than others, and it’s really made for storing just a couple of days’ worth of wood in your house or on your patio. If you need to store a lot of wood, it is not the one for you.

This one is a great indoor fire pit storage rack. The capacity is, naturally, a lot lower than most on this list, since it’s not made to be a storage rack for all your wood for a whole season. Instead, it’s there to give you a nice place for some logs indoors next to your fire pit so you can cozy up during the winter.

The only issue I can find with Best Choice Products Firewood Log Storage Rack is the price, which is where pricing for things like this gets weird. It’s fair enough for what it is, but matches the price with huge models like the Landmann outdoor option. Obviously this does not match that in terms of capacity, but it doesn’t necessarily need to; it’s specialized for light duty use, but it’s still well enough made to last you a while.

Don’t get this one if you need high capacity log storage, but by all means give it a shot if you need something compact that looks pretty nice to go in your living room or patio near an outdoor fire pit.

7. GASPRO 8FT Firewood Rack Outdoor

GASPRO 8FT Firewood Rack

Why you’ll love it:

The GASPRO 8-foot firewood rack is the perfect, simple solution for storing firewood, or wood for your smoker. The 8-foot metal rack stores a large amount of wood on a sturdy metal frame. The rack comes with a handy water-resistant cover to keep your firewood dry, even in rain and snow storms.

The powder-coated steel rack sits 8.4 inches off the ground keeping your logs free of debris, moisture and pests. The narrow and compact design of this firewood rack allows it to fit conveniently on your porch or patio for easy access when you need firewood.

What we liked

  • Capacity: It is divided into two, 4-foot sections. Each section holds just less than a half a cord of wood. Total capacity of the GASPRO firewood rack is just under a full cord of wood.
  • Materials: This rack is made from long lasting steel construction. The steel tubing is powder coated for added protection from rusting or corrosion. The PVC fabric cover is waterproof and tear resistant, providing long lasting protection for your firewood.
  • Durability: The GASPRO features a reinforced base that improves the strength of the rack and reduces bending of the base supports. The steel tube construction provides even more strength along with an attractive look. You’ll have no problem putting this on your deck or patio.
  • Easy to assemble: The GASPRO 8-foot firewood rack does require assembly. However, this is a simple process and all of the parts and tools you need are included in the package.

What we didn’t like

  • Assembly: Despite being easy to assemble, the one thing that was disappointing about the assembly process was that instructions were not included. Sure, it was pretty clear what needed to be put together, but some basic instructions would have been helpful.
  • Price: Considering that this rack is pretty simple, and it doesn’t have a lot of extras, it is a bit higher priced than other similarly sized firewood racks.
  • Size: It’s kind of strange that it doesn’t hold a full cord of wood. Sure it would have needed to be a little larger, but if you buy firewood by the cord, this will be an annoyance.

The GASPRO 8-foot firewood rack is the perfect companion for your deck or patio. This simple but attractive firewood rack holds nearly a cord of wood, which is plenty for most homes.

The GASPRO firewood rack is made from sturdy steel tubing that is powder coated black to protect against rust and corrosion. The simple design is sturdy, and the included PVC fabric cover protects your firewood from the elements, so you never have to worry about burning damp wood.

FINAL VERDICT

Woodhaven

Gauging which of these firewood racks is the “best” is a bit difficult. In terms of construction and price, they’re all solid, leaving it down to capacity, but a larger capacity doesn’t NECESSARILY mean better, as I mentioned further up. Ultimately, I went with the Woodhaven option because it was both the largest and the best built, but its pricing also leaves much to be desired, hence why a close runner up was the Landmann model, which was almost as big (and sturdy enough), but less than half the price.

But it’s ultimately going to come down to how much wood you need to store. There’s no reason to get a model that stores a lot more wood than you’ll need; it’s just a waste of money and space.
