How to Choose the Best Wusthof Knives Set?

Choosing the best knife set for your home kitchen is as simple as making three decisions:

Decision #1: What Will You Use Your Knives For?

While everyone should have the essentials of a great chef’s knife and paring knife, how adventurous you are in the kitchen will determine a lot for how many knives you’ll need. For instance:

  • Do you bake bread at home? You’ll need a bread knife.
  • Are you a vegetarian? A utility knife makes veggie breakdown much easier.
  • How often do you cook at home? A honing steel can keep your knife in great shape if you cook frequently

When looking through each of the knife sets in this review, try to imagine everything that you might be able to use the knives for. Even if you’re not currently a kitchen pro, having the right knives can make it much easier to become one.

Decision #2: How Much Space Do You Have?

Though it might be awesome to have a massive set of knives with an option for every cooking task under the sun, this isn’t always realistic.

For most homes (and most kitchens), available space is always at a premium. In this step, survey your kitchen and ask yourself:

  • How much counter space do I have?
  • Where can I safely keep a knife set?
  • Should I keep my knives in a cabinet?
  • How to properly maintain your knives?

Always go for the knife set that fits your space’s unique needs. After all, the fanciest knives in the world will do you no good if you never find yourself looking to use them!

Decision #3: What Is Your Budget?

Let’s be entirely honest with ourselves: Great knives are an investment. If you want a truly exceptional knife set, you’ll have to pay for it — though maybe not as much as you think…

Wusthof makes knives sets in a wide range of prices, and can accommodate everyone from the first-time home cook to the aspiring chef.

So set a budget for yourself, but realize that the investment you make in a great knife set today will set you up for future successes in the kitchen. Take our hard-earned advice, and invest in the best knife set you can afford.

The 9 Best Wusthof Knives of 2022

1. Best Overall – WÜSTHOF Gourmet 16-Piece Knife Block Set

WÜSTHOF Gourmet

Why you’ll love it:

Perfect for the chef that wants to upgrade to a more professional knife set, the Wusthof Gourmet 16-piece knife set with block is a great option for a great price. This high-quality knife set comes with every knife you could possibly need for your kitchen.

The beautiful knife block is perfectly made to hold all of your knives, while also protecting them from damage, and protecting your fingers from unintentional injury.

The 16-piece set of gourmet chef’s knives also comes with a Wusthof honing steel so you can you’re your knives perfectly sharpened. You will also love the kitchen shears that separate, for easy cleaning.

What we liked

  • Blade Material: The Wusthof line of knives starts with high-carbon steel as the base. Each blade is forged from the best material and perfectly sharpened for high-performance, right from the box.
  • Quality Handles: The 16-piece Gourmet knife set features sleek, and attractive polypropylene handles. They are triple riveted to the blade and are super durable.
  • Quality Construction: Wusthof knives are known for their quality construction. These knives are nicely balanced, and the blade material is rust and stain resistant.
  • Easy to Use: This set of knives is well-balanced, making them easy to handle. The ergonomic handles are comfortable to hold and provide plenty of support for safe and confident handling.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: The price tag on this set is a bit high. Considering that it isn’t Wusthof’s high end line, the price is a bit more than you might want to spend on starter knives.
  • Not Easy to Clean: If you want to be able to use your dishwasher to clean your kitchen knives, skip this set. They are hand wash only, as is the case with most high-quality knives.
  • Durability: You do get what you pay for with these knives. While they are still a great quality, the Gourmet line is a step down from the Classic line. This small difference results in a blade that just doesn’t hold its sharp edge quite as well.
  • The Shears: We like the idea of the shears that come apart, but they tend to be difficult to put back together over time, and after assembling and disassembling repeatedly they don’t stay together as tightly.

The Wusthof Gourmet line is the perfect option if you are looking for a better quality knife set without having to spend a ton of money. This set comes with all of the essential kitchen knives, including six steak knives, a spreading knife, and honing steel.

To perfectly display your beautiful set of Wusthof knives, this set comes with an attractive acacia wood block that is made to perfectly hold and protect all of your Wusthof knives.

2. Runner Up – WÜSTHOF Classic 7-piece Slim Knife Block Set

WÜSTHOF Gourmet

Why you’ll love it:

The Wusthof 7-piece Classic knife set with slim knife block is an essential for every kitchen. This attractive set of knives looks great on your counter and is equally great to use.

The Wusthof Classic knives are full-tang blades made from German high-carbon steel. Each blade is made to exacting standards and are perfectly sharpened right out of the box.

The slim knife block fits perfectly with your kitchen décor and comes in three different colors. If you have a small kitchen but still want the convenience of a knife set on your counter, the Wusthof Classic 7-piece set with slim knife block is a perfect pick.

What we liked

  • Blade Material: The knives in this set are 20% sharper than similar products from other makers. The full tang, high-carbon stainless steel blade is durable and resists stains and rusting.
  • Quality Handles: Polyoxymethylene or POM handles are super durable and long lasting. The Wusthof 7-piece set comes with triple-riveted handles with the Wusthof trident logo.
  • Easy to Use: These knives are well-balanced and comfortable. The ergonomic handles provide a secure grip.
  • Small Footprint: If you don’t have a ton of counter space, this knife block is perfect. The ultra slim footprint takes up very little room on your counter.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: The price tag for these knives are higher than we expected, especially for only seven knives and no honing steel.
  • Not Easy to Clean: High quality knives should never go in the dishwasher, so if you’re looking for a set that you don’t have to hand wash, this isn’t the one for you.
  • The Shears: This was the most disappointing part of the set. The shears are really sub-par. Loved the knives, but can live without the shears.

Perfect for the chef that wants to upgrade to a more professional knife set, the Wusthof Gourmet 16-piece knife set with block is a great option for a great price. This high-quality knife set comes with every knife you could possibly need for your kitchen.

3. Best Value – WÜSTHOF 8-Piece Stainless Mignon Steak Knife Set

WÜSTHOF 8-Piece Stainless Mignon

Why you’ll love it:

This beautiful and sleek set of steak knives is one of our favorites in the Wusthof line. These attractive full-tang, high-carbon steel steak knives slide through your favorite cut of meat with perfection and ease.

The Mignon steak knife set is well balanced and is surprisingly lightweight, making them easy to handle. The serrated blades are buffed to a high shine, making them a perfect complement to an elegant table setting.

The eight-piece set of steak knives come tucked in a beautiful olive wood case that securely holds each knife and protects them from damage.

What we liked

  • Blade Material: The blades of the Mignon steak knives are made from high carbon stainless steel. This means that these blades are constructed to last and be exceptionally durable.
  • Durability: The full-tang construction of these knives mean that you won’t have to worry about the blade separating from the handle. Also with no added plastic handle, you won’t have to worry about cracking or separating.
  • Quality Construction: These knives come out of the box sharp, and ready to use. They are attractive, and well made.
  • Easy to Use: Though sharpness can be a distinction of quality construction, it also adds to the ease of use for a knife. These knives are quite sharp and easily cut through all of your favorite cuts of meat.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: These steak knives are a bit high priced. They are definitely not a budget friendly option. However, you get what you pay for, and these knives may set you back a bit now, but they will last you a long time.
  • Cleaning: We were disappointed at how easily these knives held onto fingerprints. You’ll find yourself wanting to shine them and buff out fingerprints when you are setting your table or putting your knives in storage.
  • Storage: The storage box is great for protecting these knives, but it is a bit bulky, so it takes up a lot of drawer space. If you’ve got limited storage, you may find the storage box to be a bit too much.

The simple yet contemporary styling of the Mignon steak knives are the perfect complement to any table setting. They fit perfectly in an elegant table setting as easily as they fit with your everyday steak dinner.

The 4.5-inch serrated blades make easy work of most cuts of meat. Constructed of high-carbon steel, despite the elegant look these blades were constructed to last you for many years.

4. Great Prep Knife – WÜSTHOF Classic 2-Piece Prep Knife Set

WÜSTHOF Classic 2-Piece

Why you’ll love it:

If you are just building your kitchen, and you’re not ready to invest in a full knife set, the Wusthof Classic 2-piece prep knife set is a great place to start. This set comes with a basic, yet versatile chef’s knife and a paring knife. These two knives are the most versatile for any kitchen.

The Wusthof knives are made from high-carbon steel and feature full-tang construction. The handles are made from durable and attractive polyoxymethylene (POM) that is triple riveted to the blade. For the beginner, this is the perfect set of knives and a nice investment to your kitchen.

What we liked

  • Blade Material: The Classic line of Wusthof knives are made from high-carbon German steel. They are forged from a single piece of metal which is tempered to 58° Rockwell, making them quite strong and durable.
  • Quality Handles: Lower quality knives generally use polypropylene, which is an OK material, but the next step up is POM, which is more durable, and is made to stand up to more wear and tear over time.
  • Quality Construction: Each blade in the Classic 2-piece knife set is full-tang, high-carbon steel. The blades are perfectly sharpened for exceptional performance. The steel is rust and stain resistant so your knives will look great for many years.
  • Easy to Use: Since you’ll use these knives the most, you’ll be impressed with how comfortable the ergonomic handles are. They allow you to handle these knives safely even when your hands are wet or greasy.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: For just two knives, the price tag here is a bit high. Of course you get what you pay for, so while a lower price would be nice, you really get a nice product.
  • Chef Knife: A 6” chef’s knife is a strange size. It would seem more practical to include an 8” chef’s knife for more versatility.
  • No Storage: These knives don’t come with any storage option. For the protection of your knives and your fingers, you’ll want to invest in sheaths or a block.

The Wusthof Classic 2-piece prep knife set features two of the most frequently used knives in the kitchen. For the beginner just looking to start a quality collection of kitchen knives, this is the perfect place to start.

The set comes with a 3.5-inch paring knife and a 6-inch chef’s knife. Both knives are made from high-carbon German steel. The blades are full-tang and perfectly balanced for easy and comfortable use.

5. WÜSTHOF Classic IKON 2-Piece Prep Knife Set

WÜSTHOF Classic IKON 2Piece Prep

Why you’ll love it:

If you are ready to take your kitchen knives to the next level, the Wusthof IKON 2-piece set is a great place to start. The IKON line of knives is one of the best quality lines that Wusthof makes. They are made in Germany and are crafted to exceptional standards of function and design.

The beautifully shaped knives are full-tang, well-balanced and exceptionally sharp. The handles are triple riveted polyoxymethylene, so they are extra durable while also being quite elegant.

The IKON 2-piece set comes with a 6-inch chef’s knife and a 3.5-inch paring knife, which are the two most frequently used knives in most kitchens. This makes this set a perfect place to start when you are looking for a higher quality knife for your kitchen.

What we liked

  • Blade Material: The high-carbon, German steel of these blades are made to be exceptionally sharp, durable and free from corrosion and stains. These knives feature Wusthof’s Precision Edge Technology, which makes their blades 20% sharper than knives from other manufacturers.
  • Quality Handles: It’s really nice when the handle of a knife is as attractive as it is functional. These knives have beautiful POM handles that are elegant but at the same time ergonomic and comfortable to hold.
  • Quality Construction: Both blades in this knife set are full-tang and forged from a single piece of steel. This makes these knives sturdier and less prone to breakage. The extra sharp blade is also very easy to hone and maintains a sharp edge for longer than other types of steel.
  • Easy to Use: We found these knives to be very well-balanced, making them a pleasure to use. The ergonomic handle is smooth and more rounded which makes it easier to grasp and hold securely.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: These are high end, exceptional quality knives, so you get what you pay for, but there is a bit of sticker shock with the price of these knives. It would be nice if they were just a little more affordable.
  • Not Easy to Clean: Your high-end knives should never go in the dishwasher. This means you’ll be handwashing these knives after every use.
  • Protection: This is by far the most disappointing part of this knife set. It doesn’t come with any type of protection for your knives. You’ll need to invest in a block or other type of storage to protect your knives.

The Wusthof IKON prep knife set features two of the most popular knives in the kitchen. The two-piece set comes with a 6-inch chef’s knife and a 3.5-inch paring knife.

Both feature Wusthof’s high-carbon German steel and elegant POM handles. For the chef that is looking to step up their kitchen knives, this is the perfect place to start.

6. Best Minimalist Set – Wusthof 9601 Classic IKON Three Piece Cook’s Set

9601 Classic IKON Three Piece Cook's Set

Why you’ll love this:

In Europe Wusthof is one of the most popular cutlery brands. The IKON line is one of their higher end options for kitchen knives. These beautiful full-tank blades are well-balanced, lightweight, and perfectly sharpened.

The blades of these knives stay sharp for a long time, and hone back to perfection with minimal effort. The 3-piece set comes with 8-inch carving and chef’s knives and a 3.5-inch paring knife.

Though smaller than some other sets, these three knives are perfectly suited for every task in your kitchen.

What We Liked

  • Blades: The IKON line of knives from Wusthof are a step above other options. The blades are made from high-carbon German steel. The blades are laser sharpened so they are super sharp right from the box.
  • Durability: The steel alloy that Wusthof knives are made from are made to be extra durable. They aren’t brittle and can handle difficult kitchen tasks. They hone easily for a consistently sharp blade.
  • Quality Construction: These full tang blades are well balanced, and easy to handle. They come with a very sharp edge and a high quality, triple riveted POM handle.
  • Easy to Use: The Wusthof IKON knives are not too heavy, so they are a good pick for any chef. The ergonomic handles provide a comfortable and secure grip.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Price: This three-piece set is supposed to be Wusthof’s IKON starter set. But, for a starter set, the price tag is pretty high.
  • Not Easy to Clean: If you don’t like hand washing your dishes, don’t buy this set. These higher quality knives cannot go in the dishwasher.
  • No Storage: For the price, you would think that this set would come with blade protectors at least. If you want storage, you’ll have to buy something separately.

Are you not so sure about this whole “knife set” thing?

Maybe you’ve even had a bad experience with cheap knife sets before.

Or perhaps your kitchen needs err on the simpler, more minimalist side?

Either way, the Classic Ikon 3-Piece set makes an ideal introduction to the world of Wusthof knives sets.

So if you’re unsure about how much you might need a Wusthof knife set, start with this minimalist option before seeing if you need anything else.

7. Best Set Without Storage – Wusthof 9751 CLASSIC Six Piece Cook’s Set

9751 CLASSIC Six Piece Cook's Set

Why you’ll love it:

So far, all but one set on our list has come with a storage block. But what if you already have somewhere to store your knife set?

When that’s the case, the Classic 6-piece set from Wusthof makes the absolute most sense to invest in. By avoiding the sizable cost of a wooden storage block, you can make room for tools that will yield maximum return in your kitchen.

Included in this set are a 4 inch Paring Knife, 5 inch Boning Knife, 8 inch Bread Knife, 8 inch Cook’s Knife, 9 inch Carving Knife and 9 inch Honing Steel. The honing steel is especially critical to your at home knife setup, as it lets you keep your knives sharper for longer.

When you already have somewhere to store your knives, get this set to maximize the value on your knife investment!

What we liked

  • Blade Material: The Wusthof Classic knife series is the staple in the Wusthof line. This 6-piece set is made from high-carbon stainless steel that is sharpened using Wusthof’s Precision Edge Technology, which results in a super sharp knife.
  • Durability: High-carbon stainless steel is made to resist rusting, staining and blades stay sharper, longer.
  • Quality Construction: All Wusthof products are made to a high, exacting standard. The POM handles are triple riveted, and the full-tang blades are sturdy and resist staining. Wusthof has a limited lifetime warranty that stands behind the craftsmanship of their knives.
  • Easy to Use: The Wusthof Classic 6-piece set is nicely balanced, and the POM, ergonomic handles are comfortable and easy to grip.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: The Classic cook’s set is a bit higher priced compared to other similar sets. While Wusthof is a quality product, this isn’t the top of their line, but the price feels better suited for a higher quality product.
  • Bread Knife:  The bread knife is too short. It worked great, but at 8-inches the blade barely makes it through a standard loaf of bread.
  • No Storage: This Wusthof set does not come with a storage option (bag or block). What’s even more frustrating is that you can’t even find a good storage block that matches with the set to purchase separately.

8. WÜSTHOF Gourmet 16-Piece White Knife Block Set

WÜSTHOF Gourmet 16-Piece White

Why you’ll love it:

Not every kitchen or chef wants knives with black handles. So, the 16-piece Wusthof Gourmet knife set with white handles is a unique and stunning alternative to the traditional black handles.

This set is the perfect knife set if you are on a budget but still want a high-quality knife set for your kitchen. This beautiful set comes with all of the knives you need, a set of stainless-steel kitchen shears and a honing steel.

All of the knives in this set are stored for easy access and safe storage in a beautiful acacia wood block that displays your knives perfectly.

What we liked

  • Blade Material: These full-tang blades are made with the same high quality, high-carbon steel that all Wusthof knives are made from. The steel is made to hold a sharp edge longer, and hones easily back to a super sharp edge.
  • Quality Handles: The set of Gourmet knives feature bright white, polypropylene handles that are triple riveted to the blades. The handles on these knives are also exceptionally durable, thanks to the exacting Wusthof standards.
  • Quality Construction: Despite being quite lightweight, these blades are actually very well constructed. The high carbon steel is strong, and rust and stain resistant.
  • Easy to Use: The attractive ergonomic handles, combined with well-balanced full-tang blades are comfortable and easy to use, and feel great even for smaller hands.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: The Wusthof name comes at a price. Even the lower-level lines like the Gourmet sets, are a bit pricey. If you are wanting a nice set of knives, and you’re on a limited budget, these may just be out of your price range.
  • Durability: Even Wusthof uses slightly less durable materials in their entry level products. You’ll not be disappointed with these knives, but you will definitely want to upgrade them over time. The quality just isn’t as good as other options in the Wusthof line.
  • The Knife Block: We were surprised that the slots on the knife block were so large. The knives all fit in their designated spaces, but the fit was loose and sloppy.

For the chef that is looking for a knife set that looks like no other, but is still a great performing knife set, the Wusthof Gourmet 16-piece knife set with white handles is a great option.

This knife set stands alone among the normal looking sets, but like all Wusthof knives, this set is made from superior materials and is crafted to last you many years.
